As global efforts toward a clean energy transition continue to accelerate, increasing attention is being placed on approaches that are not only sustainable, but also grounded in rights, governance, and community leadership.
The upcoming session of the Indigenous Peoples Renewable Energy Pathfinders (IPREP), an initiative of the Right Energy Partnership with Indigenous Peoples, will feature the experience of Aliansi Masyarakat Adat Nusantara (AMAN) Sintang Local Chapter in West Kalimantan, Indonesia – working in collaboration with the Keling Kumang Credit Union and the Dayak Seberuang Indigenous Peoples, the session will highlight how renewable energy development can be shaped through Indigenous Peoples’ customary governance systems and guided by the principle of self-determination.
Rather than approaching energy as a purely technical intervention, the discussion will explore how community institutions, local financing mechanisms, and Indigenous leadership intersect to create solutions that are both sustainable and accountable to the communities they serve.
Participants will gain practical insights into Indigenous governance in energy decision-making, the role of community-based financial systems in enabling implementation, and lessons from on-the-ground collaboration in West Kalimantan.
This session is part of IPREP’s ongoing effort to strengthen interlearning among Indigenous Peoples and build a global network of practitioners advancing community-led renewable energy systems grounded in equity, ownership, and self-determination.
